Colonoscopy November 18, 2005

Sorry I don't have a nifty coloscopy picture to add to the blog, but they didn't give me a copy! Wednesday morning I got to eat breakfast, but then I had to start a clear liquid diet. By the time I'd gotten through my lunch of Jello, I was already tired of it! At 3pm I had to take FOUR Dulcolax tablets to "get things started". Then at 6pm I had 4 hours to drink 64 oz of Gatoraid mixed with a huge bottle of Mirilax. Have you ever consumed 64 oz of liquid in 4 hours??? Not an easy task. By the time I was thru with 3/4 of the "prep" it was obvious to me that I needed drink any more! So, I didn't. The GI practice wasn't very nice to me and scheduled my procedure for 2:45 pm on Thursday, first thing in the morning would have been MUCH kinder. I let the nurse who was starting my IV that I couldn't have Demerol because I was breastfeeding. I knew that Stadol and Versed would be okay. She suggested Phentenol instead and called the pharmacy to make sure it would be safe. When she told the doctor, he asked if I couldn't just not breastfeed for 48 hours. I told him that wasn't going to happen, so he decided the Phentenol would be okay. I guess the drugs did *something*, but I was conscious throughout the procedure and had significant discomfort in my gut. Thankfully, the whole thing only took 15 minutes or so. I guess I was supposed to be completely disoriented (Pete was for quite awhile after his), but I was just ready to go EAT . So, we went to Old Chicago and had some yummy pizza. Oh, and the most important thing is that they didn't find anything wrong, just some hemorrhoids that I can thank my kids for.
